Dingell on the Federal Marriage Amendment
Dear Ms. Blough:
Thank you for your letter opposing H.J.Res.56. the Federal Marriage Amendment. I appreciate hearing from you.
As you know, Representative Marilyn Musgrave (D-CO) introduced H.J. Res.56 on May 21, 2003. This amendment would declare that marriage in the United States consists of only the union between a man and a woman. Furthermore, it would state that neither the U.S. Constitution or the constitution of any state, nor state or federal law, could be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups. I will be sure to keep your views in mind should this legislation come to the House floor for debate and a vote.
You may also be interested to know that I am a cosponsor of H.R. 2426, the Domestic Partners Benefits and Obligations Act. In addition, during the 107th Congress, I voted for the right of the District of Columbia to implement its domestic partnership program and cosponsored the Employment Non discrimination Act, and the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act.
Thank you again for your correspondence. Please feel free to contact me again about this or any other matter.
With every good wish.
Sincerely,
John D. Dingell
