Post details: Michigan Sprite Melons

Michigan Sprite Melons

I bought a variety of melon at Coleman's the other day that I had never seen before. I bought 2 of the largest melons. Most of them were softball size and white. They don't smell like anything. They have brown circular marks on one end and a stem at the other.

[More:]

Inside, they're like a squash or pumpkin. No rind really, just skin, flesh and seeds. The texture is like an apple or firm pear. They taste just like cantaloupe.

UPDATE: According to the Southest Farm Press, sprite melons are an asian variety of melon that tobacco farmers in North Carolina have been growing as an alternative specialty crop. This reminds me of an article Coley allerted me to recently about tobacco farmers growing truffles.

It's Melonfest at our house right now. I ate a Howell melon for dinner! Howell, MI, is semi-famous for melons, you know. http://www.detnews.com/2003/livingston/0308/18/d03-245859.htm
